CASA TAPAS

While Spain has become one of the pre-eminent centers of modern cuisine and its traditional cuisines are being discovered around the world, Spanish food in Montreal remains an afterthought confined to uninspired tapas and McPaellas. While I can easily think of “Spanish” restaurants to avoid (Nuevo comes rushing to mind) there isn’t a Spanish restaurant in the city that is a mandatory stop for foodies. I don’t regularly eat at Casa Tapas but have been a few times and have always left happy. The tapas are simple but well prepared and are a cut above in terms of ingredients and preparation. Favourites have included grilled sardines with cumin and braised sweetbreads with grapes. Casa Tapas also offers paella that, while nothing to write home about, are in the upper end of what you can find in the city. The decor is warm and the ambiance is welcoming and energetic. Another option I have not tried yet but which has received good reviews is Tapeo.
