Montreal has a pretty sizeable Portuguese community, whose culinary influence is  reflected in the many Mom and Pop bakeries and Portuguese grill restaurants. Any number of these restaurants offer a rustic,  filling and affordable meal in a (usually)boisterous setting. Moving into the realm of fine dining, Ferreira Café, which offers modern Portuguese influenced fare, is one of the better restaurants in the city.

FERREIRA CAFÉ

Café Ferreira offers high end versions of Portuguese classics such as grilled sardines and bacalhau as well as an inventive seafood driven menu. The seared tuna with  foie gras mashed potatoes, for example, might not be traditional, but it is very tasty. Ferreira also offers a great selection of Portuguese wines. Try not to get seated at the back of the restaurant, which is like a troll’s cavern, but push for a seat near the front where it is airier and brighter. Always packed at lunch, Café Ferreira is quieter at dinner and makes an interesting alternative for a high end meal that doesn’t revolve around duck confit and porterhouse steaks.

ROMADOS

Montreal has its fair share of Portuguese rotisserie restaurants specializing in charcoal grilled chicken, fish and other goodies. Were it not for a sprinkling of tables tucked into the corners, this bakery/rotisserie/convenience store would not even qualify as a restaurant, but you can sit down and eat at Romados and it does serve the best Portuguese-style grilled chicken money can buy in Montreal. Store their number on your cell phone, give them a call 20 minutes before you get there and proceed directly to the pick-up window bypassing a half hour wait in line. Romados also offers a decent selection of Portuguese pastries, including a nice version of the ever popular natas.

CHEZ DOVAL

If you’re looking for a sit-down option for grilled Portuguese delicacies, Chez Doval is probably your best choice. Chez Doval serves up the basic Portuguese rotisserie menu including succulent chicken, grouper and calamari grilled on charcoal behind the bar. Their carne alentejana (pork with potatoes and clams) is  my favourite in Montreal. The atmosphere is loud and lively with a guitar playing ministrel making the rounds and the decor is 70s time warp. When the food is good Chez Doval dishes up some of the best Portuguese in Montreal but it is not consistently excellent and the service is even less so. Reservations are essentially meaningless here although having one may help you get a seat ahead of the walk-ups.
