LOS CLASICOS

Doesn’t Mexican slot nicely into Latin American food? I guess but it tends to be so much more familiar it makes sense to discuss on its own. Montreal has traditionally been blessed with sad facsimiles of Tex-Mex restaurants (think Carlos & Pepes) frequented by frat boys and the girls who love them, but over the course of the last few years, we have seen quite a few newcomers trying to produce authentic, regional Mexican cuisine, albeit with varying degrees of success. Los Clasicos is probably my favourite in this category. It’s not that the food is without blemishes, but this Oaxacan influenced eatery puts out traditional homestyle food  in big portions, at a good price and with a smile.  That might not cut it in California, but it’s pretty good for Montreal.

EL REY DEL TACO

Okay, this isn’t even a restaurant. So far, it’s been a stand sheltering a flattop set up outside Tortilleria Maya in the Jean Talon Market. But this winter I understand they are moving inside and so I’m including it in this list. It’s my favourite place to get Mexican and feels like a roadside taco stand with chef Javier Munoz grilling up divine beef and chicken tacos, quesadillas and other goodies to order. Interesting goodies like chicharron gorditas and Oaxacan tamales are also on offer sporadically so it makes sense to sniff around when you go.
