EL REY DEL TACO

Montreal has traditionally been blessed with sad facsimiles of Tex-Mex restaurants  frequented by frat boys and the girls who love them (think Carlos & Pepes), but over the course of the last few years, we have seen a few newcomers offering a more authentic, sometimes regional, Mexican cuisine, albeit with varying degrees of success. El Rey started off as a stand sheltering a flattop outside Tortilleria Maya in the Jean Talon Market.  It felt like a roadside taco stand with chef Javier Munoz fixing up rustic beef and chicken tacos, quesadillas and other Central Mexican fare to order. They have since moved into the space next to Maya and the menu has expended somewhat with items like chicharron gorditas and Oaxacan tamales on offer. It ain’t pretty–think plastic chairs, tables, tablecloths…umm generally a lot of plastic–but it still has that taco stand feel.
