HALTE URBAINE

I loved chef Ian Perreault's now defunct Area and was excited when I heard he was opening a new restaurant in the space in the Theatre Outremont that the over-rated La Tartine used to occupy. I was also intrigued by the "risotto-bar" concept in which punters can order a basic risotto and spice it up with the ingredients they like best. Sadly, like many great ideas this one falls apart in practice. Risotto is a notoriously difficult dish to do well and this version, made with half cooked starter rice and high end Cheez Whiz is nothing to write home about. The lobster bisque was also forgettable and the bill, while not extravagant, seemed high given what we had ate. I have considered going back for brunch, which looks interesting, but in the interim implore Mr. Perreault to put his considerable talent to work elsewhere.
