Lunch June 29, 2007
My summer tour of Montreal sandwich joints (at least the ones within walking distance of my office) continues. This time I was joined by Jimbo, Protege 2006, Protege 2007 and another summer student (who has not yet had to bear the burden of having a nickname assigned to her). Titanic serves up a variety of interesting sounding sandwiches on French bread as well as a daily special (a roast vegetable platter on this day) and the odd dessert. It is a nice room with communal tables and is a pleasant stroll from the office on a sunny day.
I had fond memories of this restaurant from my last visit and spent some time deliberating between the Italian sausage, the Mexican pork and the Bacon Butty sandwich. The Bacon Butty turned out to be cool (not ideal) slices of fried bacon with mayo, a lump of cream cheese, lettuce, tomato and a few misplaced chives on bread that was a little hard. Not a big winner when paired with a bottle of generic water and retailing at $12.50. Perhaps just a little bad luck, but two of my dining companions ordered the “Nicoise” (quotes used to indicate irony and not the use of a foreign word) which looked and tasted (I managed to snag a half) a lot like the tuna salad sandwich Mom used to make.
Not very impressive, but I have enjoyed Titanic in the past and plan to come back again as soon as I recover…perhaps next summer. Until then, Titanic is being demoted from my A-List of sandwich joints .
